St Patrick’s Parish in the Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe has today concluded celebrations marking 50 years of its existence, with the parish priest, Fr Kennedy Malemia, calling on the faithful to remain united in promoting the growth and development of the parish.

The closing celebration took place at St Paul’s Kauma Outstation, bringing together parishioners to mark the end of a series of activities held in all three places: M’gubo Outstation, St Patrick’s Parish and St Paul’s Kauma Outstation.

Speaking at the Ceremony, Fr Malemia thanked God for sustaining the parish over the past 50 years and paid tribute to the pioneers who laid the foundation for its growth.

He said the contributions of the early members were bearing fruit, as reflected in the progress the parish has made over the years.

“We thank them for the seeds they sowed, and we are very sure that the seeds which were sown by them are now bearing fruit, looking at what we have experienced so far in this parish,” said Fr Malemia.

He, however, challenged the faithful to consider the golden jubilee as an opportunity to renew their commitment to the Church, saying there is still more work to be done in building the parish.

Fr Malemia urged parishioners to work together in unity and love while continuing to spread the Christian faith in their families and communities.

His message coincided with the celebration of World Mission Sunday, which calls on Christians to participate in the Church’s missionary work.

Speaking on behalf of the parish, first chairperson Joshua Shaba said the three celebrations have reinforced the importance of unity among the parish’s communities.

Shaba said Mgubo, St Patrick’s and St Paul’s Kauma collectively form one parish and should continue working together towards achieving their common goals.

“As we start another milestone, we have a number of plans in all the three churches,” said Shaba, adding that the plans include church growth and other development activities.

Meanwhile, St Paul’s Kauma Outstation Chairperson Noel Chimbenje expressed satisfaction with the turnout at the closing celebration, saying he did not expect such a large number of people after two previous events.

Chimbenje said the strong attendance and enthusiasm demonstrated that parishioners remain committed to the golden jubilee celebrations.

He also outlined development plans for the outstation, including establishing an events garden for weddings, birthday parties and other functions, as well as a car park to provide additional parking space in the area.

He said the outstation is also considering constructing accommodation for priests and sisters to make it easier for them to stay overnight after evening or night activities.

Chimbenje expressed optimism that the plans will be achieved through unity among leaders and support from the faithful.

The golden jubilee celebrations provided an opportunity for the parish to reflect on its journey, appreciate the contributions of its pioneers and renew its commitment to spiritual growth and development.
