Minister of Health and Sanitation Madalitso Baloyi says ensuring food safety requires collective responsibility among farmers, food processors, vendors and consumers.
Baloyi says farmers need to adopt good agricultural practices to ensure the food they produce is safe for consumption.
She says food processors and vendors also have a responsibility to maintain proper hygiene standards, while consumers need to be vigilant about the food they buy and prepare.

“Farmers need to make sure that they follow good agricultural practices so that the food they produce is safe,” Baloyi said.
Speaking during the World Food Safety Day commemoration, Baloyi said government is strengthening food safety surveillance, upgrading public health laboratories and modernising food safety laws to meet international standards.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s Ambassador to Malawi, Kate Brady, says Malawi now needs to put the lessons and evidence gathered on food safety into practice.
Brady says this requires increased public awareness and greater compliance with food safety standards by the private sector.

“Malawi now needs to take the lessons and evidence that have been gathered on food safety and put them into practice,” Brady said.
