The Chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi, Right Reverend Associate Professor Martin Mtumbuka—Bishop of the Diocese of Karonga and President of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB)—has expressed his delight following the official opening of the university’s new St. Thomas More Nanjiri Campus in Lilongwe.
His Lordship noted that the new campus is designed to foster both academic and spiritual growth, helping students recognize the importance of faith in their lives while steering them away from unethical behaviors, such as corruption.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Bishop Mtumbuka emphasized that the Catholic Church has always prioritized education at all levels in the country to help build human capital and drive national development.
On his part, the Counsellor of the Apostolic Nunciature of Zambia and Malawi, Monsignor Dario Pavisa, applauded the Catholic Church in Malawi under the leadership of the Bishops for the role they are playing in providing quality education.

Monsignor Pavisa said the Church in Malawi has taken many initiatives aimed at uplifting people’s lives in their communities.
The Minister of Education, Bright Msaka SC, commended the Catholic Church for establishing the Lilongwe campus, saying the institution will contribute significantly to the country’s economic development.
As government, we appreciate the Catholic Church here in Malawi for what it is doing in the education sector.”


The Minister pledged the government’s continued support for the Catholic University of Malawi to ensure it achieves its goals of providing high-quality education.
St. Thomas More Campus was officially launched on 20th June 2022 by His Grace Archbishop George Desmond Tambala of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, and it was successfully completed in 2025.
Father Dr. Israel Madziakaphwa is the Principal for this new campus.
