The Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe has urged the lay faithful to fully support the Church in fulfilling its mission of evangelisation.

Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, Right Reverend Vincent Frederick Mwakhwawa, made the call on Saturday at Maula Cathedral during the archdiocese’s seminarians’ fundraising Mass.

Bishop Mwakhwawa said the encouraging support shown by the lay faithful towards the fundraising demonstrates that Christians understand their role and responsibility in the Church.

His Lordship further emphasized the need to encourage those who do not actively participate in Church contributions, reminding them that the responsibility of evangelisation is not solely for the clergy but also involves the lay faithful.

“Let me remind the lay faithful here that they have a role to play in the Church for it to accomplish its mission of evangelisation,” he said.

In his remarks, Laity Council Chairperson Patrick Liphava commended the lay faithful for their support towards the fundraising, saying it demonstrates that the Church in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe is alive and active.

Liphava added that the lay faithful have an obligation to support the Church in all aspects to enable it to fulfil its mission.

“Let me say here that we, as the lay faithful, have a role to play in supporting the Church,” he said.

Meanwhile, Father Andrew Simpasa – SJ who represented Archbishop Alick Banda of the Archdiocese of Lusaka and serves as a team leader for the Catholic Women’s Organisation, said the Church in the country has valuable lessons to share, particularly in supporting seminarians.

Father Simpasa added that the relationship between the Archdioceses of Lilongwe and Lusaka is contributing significantly to the growth and strengthening of the Church.
