Tsabango CDSS Head Teacher in Lilongwe Urges Shift from Tree Planting to Tree Survival
Head Teacher of Tsabango CDSS in Lilongwe, Hudson Kelvin Gareta, has called for a shift in ecological strategy moving from simple tree planting to careful taking care of the planted trees for their survival.

Gareta made the call on Saturday 24, January 2026, after the school planted 600 trees donated by C. Steinweg Bridge Logistics, in partnership with the Association of Science and Environmental Journalists (AEJ) in Malawi.
“Let me begin by thanking the organization for the donation. It is important for us to ensure that we keep the school and the city green. As an institution, we are going to make sure that we take care of these trees so that they survive,” Gareta said.
He expressed optimism that, with the presence of a wildlife club at the institution, the trees’ sustainability will be maintained.
“If we lose the trees, then we have failed our mission. We need to make sure that we take care of these trees from the moment they are planted until they are fully grown,” he added.
Environmental Health and Safety Officer for C. Steinweg Bridge Logistics, Wamaka Neba, said the organization’s goal is to help the nation achieve its Malawi 2063 development agenda by participating in environmental sustainability enabler.

“As a company, we decided to support that vision by launching a sustainability effort. We started a nursery in our yard to grow trees and distribute them to stakeholders who can nurture them to meet environmental goals,” Neba explained.

Neba added that the company targets to plant about 100,000 trees by the year 2030.
Owen Nyaka, a science and environmental journalist, described the partnership as crucial, noting that planting trees is key to restoring the environment.

The government has set a target of 41 million trees to be planted across the country during the 2025/2026 tree-planting season.
