Eye Surgery Medical Camp Relieves Over 500 From Cataracts

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe has devoted itself to continue supporting quality of lives and improving the quality of health by supporting government efforts through the ministry of health.

Director of social services in the archdiocese, Brian Odiambo reemphasized the commitment as Likuni Mission Hospital, one of the health centers managed by the archdiocese, was conducting an eye surgery medical camp this week.

Odiambo cited that the medical camp was organized in collaboration with Active Africa, a foundation based in Spain, which coordinates with another foundation called Barancare which gets doctors or specialists from different countries.

He thanked various players including the two foundations and the ministry of health for their continued support in making the archdiocese’s objectives possible.

“We have seen that with this support, many patients who are having difficulties with seeing, difficulties with the eye, have been operated on, the cataracts, and they are able to see better now. It is very much life-changing when someone has problems with seeing and then all of a sudden gets to see again,” said Odiambo.

Likuni Mission Hospital chief medical officer, Dr Jeremoni Chiundira says they intend to have similar initiatives in the future as cataracts problem remains a barrier.

“As a missionary hospital, working hand in hand with our partners, we wish to be hosting like eye camps on a regular basis so that we help people in the community who have got visual problems,” said Dr Chiundira.

In her remarks, Active Africa president, Teresa Garolera mentioned their continued support and collaboration to various projects in the country.

“We would like to operate more people of course but let me say that we also rely on doctors in Malawi for us this is the most important thing, I mean this is a thing that we can make once because well opportunity comes but we as active Africa we like to collaborate projects in Malawi,” she said.

Evarald Chibambo from Ekwendeni in Mzimba and Mades Kontilaki from Chileka in Lilongwe testified and thanked the medical practitioners for the successful operation as they’re back to normal sight.

About 600 people from Various locations in the country with Cataracts problems have been operated at this eye surgery medical camp.
